Simon James Arthur Taufel, born 21 January 1971 in St Leonards, New South Wales, is a current international cricket umpire and a member of the ICC Elite umpire panel. The winner of five consecutive ICC Umpire of the Year awards, Taufel is generally considered to be the best umpire in the world.
Some people believe that Taufel is the best umpire in the world, and in August 2006 in the ICC's annual umpire review he was officially ranked second for accuracy , and top overall. He is highly respected for his decision making ability, and is also highly regarded for his calm and positive on field manner.
At the 2006 Champions Trophy he umpired a semi-final, but could not umpire the final because Australia had reached the final. In January 2007 he became the youngest umpire to stand in 100 ODIs, and in April 2007 took charge of the World Cup semi-final between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, being ineligible for the final which featured Australia.
Whatever awards he get and how many times he gets the best umpire awards he is very much worried only for one thing..thats he has not been allowed to umpire in the world cup final as Australia reaches the final(the umpire from the same country which plays should not do the umpiring for that match). He jocularly tels that he prays to god to make Australia not to reach the final so that he wil get a chance atlast to do umpiring in any major event's final....Funny but true...
